Scar Revision Surgery
Scar Revision Surgery is performed most commonly for scars following traumatic injuries and in some instances for scars following surgical incisions. All scars whether traumatic or surgical should have a healing period of time of a least one year before consideration of any revisional surgery. In some cases lasers can be used earlier for scars that are raised and red to diminish the color and prominence of the scar. Most scars if left to heal after an injury or surgery will diminish in color over the first 12 -18 months.
Post-Traumatic Scar Revision
Post-traumatic scars may benefit from scar revision if the scars were not repaired with the best closure techniques or if they healed poorly following the injury. It is important for all scars to be shielded from the sun and UV exposure. Dr. Applebaum performs scar revision for all different types of traumatic scars using various techniques to improve the appearance and location of post injury scars. In order to determine if a given scar will improve with revisional surgery a consultation with Dr. Applebaum will be necessary. Dr. Applebaum will demonstrate the benefits and downside effects of a given scar revision potential result during the consultation visit.
Post-Surgical Scar Revision
In some cases surgical scars have healed with an unsightly appearance due to spreading from lack of layered closure, infection or due to the location of the scar. There are several factors that effect the healing of a surgical scar. Location of the scar, healing tendencies of the individual and technique of scar closure are the main factors that have to be considered for any healing scar. Dr. Applebaum can control the technique of scar closure and leaving the other two factors for healing somewhat uncontrollable. Dr. Applebaum will require a consultation to examine the surgical scar and determine if a scar revision is a procedure that will produce an improved result. In some instances Scar Revision Surgery can produce a much better result than the original surgical scar.
