What is a Tummy Tuck: Who Are The Best Candidates

Tummy Tuck

What is a Tummy Tuck?:

According to an INSIDER article, a tummy tuck is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures formed in 2017. A tummy tuck, also called, abdominoplasty is the procedure of removing excess fat and skin. The procedure offers a toned-flat tummy, and also can functionally improve the abdominal muscles.  The goal is to restore weakened muscles and create a smoother, firmer abdominal profile. The Beverly Hills Tummy Tuck Surgery

Dr. Robert Applebaum is highly experienced in tummy tuck surgeries. A large amount of excess skin can be removed to treat crepey skin and remove stretch marks that are visible.  Dr. Applebaum’s Beverly Hills Tummy Tuck is performed with a discrete incision that is located in a favorable position where it will go unnoticed. The incision allows low-riding pants to be worn with the incision still remaining concealed.  To ensure patient satisfaction, Dr. Applebaum can pre-mark the skin prior to surgery.  This means he would draw the planned incision line on the skin and then the patient can test to see if the pen markings are visible when various types of clothing are worn.  The procedure creates beautiful results, which increases contour and tightening the underlying abdominal muscles.

Combination procedures

It is not uncommon for a tummy tuck procedure to be combined with other plastic surgery procedures.  Often combining procedures offers additional aesthetics and even improved functionality.

Liposuction

Many times a tummy tuck procedure can be performed along with liposuction. Take to a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine whether or not this is the best surgery for you.

Mommy Makeover

In recent years, a procedure known as the Mommy Makeover has gained popularity.

This procedure gives moms the opportunity to get back to their old “pre-parent” bodies, and sometimes an even more improved one. Many moms will admit that becoming a mom is the most amazing and rewarding experience in life.  Along with this amazing life experience, is body changes, exhaustion, increased emotions, sleep deprivation, and lots of dirty diapers.  The body undergoes many physical changes during pregnancy and childbirth.  These changes can cause decreased elasticity of the skin, muscle weakness or separation, and increased fat deposits in unwanted areas of the body such as the abdomen. The Mommy Makeover includes a customized set of procedures to achieve that individual’s goal. A common part of the Mommy Makeover package is a tummy tuck.

Who Are the Best Candidates?

What can a tummy tuck treat?

A tummy tuck is a great option for someone looking for a nice flat toned abdomen.  Well, that sounds like something everyone wants!  It is important to choose an experienced board-certified surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate for undergoing a tummy tuck procedure.

Tummy Tucks are great for someone who has undergone excessive weight loss and has excessive skin or sagging skin.

Good surgical candidate

The American Society of Plastic Surgery reminds us that a tummy tuck should be done for yourself, and not because someone else wants you to. This is a good point to highlight in regards to any plastic surgery.  Like any surgery, plastic surgery has potential risks and you should only undergo surgery if it is something that you want to do.  Remember it is your body, so you get to decide if you want to have surgery or not.  Determining if you the right candidate to undergo surgery is something to discuss with your surgeon.  What does being a “good surgical candidate” mean? It means that your doctor feels that you are not at too high of a risk to undergo the procedure and recovery process.  It also means that your doctor believes that the results of the surgery will be beneficial.

Good surgical candidate for a tummy tuck are:

  1. Healthy: the ideal candidate is physically healthy and at a stable weight (no rapid increase or decrease in weight). A thorough medical evaluation is necessary because many medical conditions can interrupt post-operative wound healing and recovery after surgery.
  2. Expectation: A good candidate has researched the tummy tuck procedure before and after photos, and has realistic expectations of the process and outcome. This includes understanding recovery time and any restrictions involved with recovery.
  3. Non-smoker: Smoking interferes with wound healing. Good candidates are non-smokers. If you do smoke, your surgeon may require you to quit smoking for several weeks or months prior to the scheduled surgery.
  4. Substance abuse: substances like alcohol, narcotics, and illicit drug abuse can also negatively impact post-operative recovery. A good facelift candidate is not currently using any of the discussed substances.
  5. Concerned with abdominal appearance: Seeking fat removal skin and muscle tightening.

How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2019 statistics reported that the average cost of a tummy tuck is $6,092.  This does not include facility expenses, anesthesia, and other expenses.  The total cost varies and your surgeon’s office can assist with a personalized quote.  Also, it is not recommended to simply go with the cheapest surgeon.  A board-certified plastic surgeon who has years of experience performing successful tummy tucks is the best option. While most insurance companies do not cover tummy tuck surgery, ask your plastic surgery office if they offer or can recommend financial planning.
