Teen Breast Reduction

Dr. Applebaum

Why Dr. Applebaum?

Patient care, trust and your satisfaction with good outcomes are my upmost concern.

Breast reduction was once a procedure performed primarily on adult women, but as puberty hits girls at younger and younger ages and causes more teenagers to suffer from macromastia, or excessively large breasts, teen breast reduction surgeries are on the rise. This once controversial is increasingly becoming more common as more doctors, patients, and parents realize that teenagers stand to gain a tremendous reduction in physical symptoms caused by
excessively large breasts, improved self confidence, and increased happiness overall. Modern Family actress underwent breast reduction surgery as a teenager and has repeatedly stated that her procedure not only resolved her neck and back pain but also dramatically improved her self confidence. Dr. Applebaum has decades of experience in helping teenage patients get their lives back and boost their confidence through breast reduction surgery.

Lollipop breast reduction:

Teenage patients who need a small to moderate reduction in
breast size will usually receive their surgery using the lollipop breast reduction technique.
This technique minimizes recovery time, causes less scarring than other techniques, and
usually does not require the use of a drain. Most patients who receive a lollipop breast
reduction are able to return to work and their normal daily routine within four to seven days
after surgery.

“Anchor” or “Inverted-T” technique:

Teenage patients who require a more substantial reduction in breast size are likely to benefit from the use of the “anchor” technique, as are
patients with breasts that droop or sag significantly. This procedure provides excellent
results but may occasionally require the placement of drains for a short period after surgery.

Dr. Applebaum recognizes that many teenagers have unique personal and aesthetic goals
for their breast reduction and will discuss these goals with you during your consultation. Keeping in mind the goals of minimizing scarring and recovery time, Dr. Applebaum will discuss the pros and cons of the various breast reduction techniques and which technique is right for your body.

Why Consider Teen Breast Reduction

Many teens today are electing to have breast reduction surgery before graduating high school to avoid the future of dealing with chronic neck and back pain along with difficulties  with their daily activities due to large and heavy breast tissue.   There is a also big  psychological  advantage of having  a breast size that is consistent with their overall body frame size.

TEEN BREAST REDUCTION FAQs

Teenagers are more likely to experience complications from breast reduction surgery
compared to older patients according to a study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The study followed 512 adolescent girls and young women between the ages of 12 and 21 who underwent breast reduction surgery between 2008 and 2017 and found that although these patients were more likely to experience complications, the vast majority of these complications did not diminish the “significant postoperative improvements in their physical and psychosocial
well-being.” The most likely complication is thickened or raised scars, which can
often be treated with a steroid injection.
Doctors and researchers once discouraged breast reduction surgery in teenagers
due to concerns about postoperative breast growth. The study published in Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery found that approximately five percent of patients
experienced postoperative breast growth, but the vast majority did not. It is Dr.
Applebaum’s experience that significant physical and emotional benefits can be
achieved even if some postoperative breast growth does occur.
No matter what your age, carrying around disproportionately large breasts is
physically and emotionally taxing. Patients often experience significant physical
discomfort associated with carrying the weight of their breasts, including back, neck,
or shoulder pain, discomfort while exercising, and shoulder grooves from bra straps
digging into the skin. Breast reduction surgery can immediately alleviate the majority
of this physical pain. For teenagers, the emotional benefits can be just as important,
as they are able to lead more active lives, fit in more with their peers, and feel more
confident about their bodies. There are also many cosmetic benefits to breast
reduction surgery, including:

● A more proportionate and balanced silhouette
● Breasts are lifted and firmer
● Large or stretched areolas and nipples can be reduced during the procedure
● Ease of finding comfortable and attractive bras, swimsuits, sports bras, and clothing
Every woman’s body is different, so the results of teen breast reduction surgery differ
from patient to patient. Most patients can expect to see a reduction of at least two cup
sizes if that is in line with their aesthetic goals. Dr. Applebaum will discuss your options
during your consultation in order to develop realistic expectations regarding your final
post-operative breast size.
Some breast reduction procedures are covered by health insurance depending on the
estimated grams of breast tissue to be removed in relation to the patient’s height and
weight, previous attempts to eliminate symptoms (such as physical therapy), and the
current symptoms you are experiencing. Most PPO insurance requires pre-authorization
from your surgeon’s office, which includes clinical information and photos. Dr.
Applebaum’s team will submit the necessary information to obtain pre-authorization for
each patient.
In order to reduce the potential for postoperative breast growth, Dr. Applebaum will
consider a patient’s physical maturity, rather than age, when evaluating the patient’s
surgical candidacy. Dr. Applebaum will talk to both the patient and her family members regarding the details of the procedure to ensure an understanding of the incision
placement, healing curve for surgical scars, future breastfeeding options, and the
process of recovering and returning to daily activities. Dr. Applebaum will also
discuss potential risks and complications while helping the patient determine a
treatment plan that will work best for them.
