Facial Contouring Procedure: 5 Benefits

Whether we like it or not, the face is typically what people notice most during first impressions.

Your appearance certainly doesn’t define who you are, but facial features are front and center so it’s important to feel confident with your appearance. If you don’t feel like your face is well-balanced or symmetrical, it can hold you back in many ways.

Facial contouring can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. It’s unnecessary to feel self-conscious about what you see in the mirror.

How Does Contouring Change Your Face?

Facial contouring with aesthetic facial implants can be used to sculpt the look you want to achieve. Cheek or chin implants are commonly used to help the facial features appear more symmetrical.

If someone has a facial feature that appears too prominent, rhinoplasty or jaw augmentation can be used to create balance and harmony across the face.

As we notice the signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and excess skin, eyelid and forehead rejuvenation surgery can tighten and smooth the skin to appear younger and refreshed.

For less severe signs of aging, injectables are a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment to restore volume and create a more youthful appearance.

When Should I Consider Facial Contouring?

Facial augmentation is a very personal decision, but if the features on your face are causing you concern, it’s something to consider.

You can enhance specific features on the face with facial implants. A chin implant can be used to make a subtle change that creates a dramatic difference to the overall look of your face.

A patient may want to consider jaw implants for a soft jawline or cheek implants for lost volume in the midface area or flat cheekbones. When it comes to the chin or cheek area, there are few alternatives to a well-placed facial implant.

5 Benefits of Facial Contouring

Facial contouring is a permanent and effective way to balance facial features and smooth aging skin.

The benefits of facial contouring include:

  1. Balance prominent facial features
  2. Smooth aging or baggy skin
  3. Create a strong facial profile
  4. Boost self-confidence
  5. Long-lasting results

Chin, cheek, and mandibular implants are commonly recommended procedures for facial rejuvenation to contour the face. In younger patients, facial implants can improve the natural anatomic structures of the face and create a stronger profile.

Let’s take a closer look at how different facial contouring procedures can offer these benefits.

What Is a Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is the most common facial implant surgery that Dr. Applebaum performs.

It’s especially popular among male patients because it’s an excellent way to add more definition to the jaw line, making it appear more masculine. Adding volume to the chin for female patients can balance other facial features and create a softer, more feminine look.

Dr. Applebaum uses a soft silicone implant that is shaped and fitted to the patient’s existing chin shape. The implant is virtually impossible to detect under the skin but provides additional projection and prominence to the chin naturally.

Two different methods can be used to insert chin implants, including creating a small incision under the chin or inserting the implant through the mouth near the gum line on the lower jaw.

In most cases, Dr. Applebaum recommends performing chin augmentation with a chin implant, but it’s also possible to surgically move the existing bone forward in a procedure known as sliding genioplasty. Comparatively, this procedure is more complex and the results are more limited in range.

Some benefits of a chin augmentation include:

  • Improved facial profile
  • More attractive jaw shape
  • Minimized appearance of a double chin
  • Balanced nose and chin to create harmony

During your consultation, Dr. Applebaum will perform a comprehensive evaluation and discuss the best options to achieve the most natural results.

What Are Cheek Implants?

Most people find highly defined, prominent cheekbones to be an attractive asset to the face. Not everyone is born with those features, in which case midfacial cheek implants can be used to give patients the high cheekbones they desire.

They can also be used for people who had naturally defined cheekbones when they were younger but have experienced changes due to aging. The natural aging process can cause the cheek fat pad and surrounding tissue to move down the face, which sometimes causes deeper laugh-line folds and a more hallowed appearance.

For patients that are self-conscious about the look of their cheekbones, midfacial cheek implants can create more prominence or restore the loss of volume to create a more lifted and youthful appearance.

Dr. Applebaum uses three types of cheek implants depending on the desired result. These include malar implants, submalar implants, and combined implants, with each type correcting a different issue.

During your consultation, Dr. Applebaum will consider your concerns, evaluate your anatomy, and determine the best implant type for your aesthetic goals.

Cheek implants can have many benefits, such as:

  • A more defined facial contour
  • Restored fullness to the midface area
  • Smoothed wrinkles or crepey skin
  • Symmetry across facial features

Are There Less Invasive Facial Contouring Options?

If you’re not ready for a permanent solution to facial contouring, dermal fillers are a good non-surgical option. Most facial fillers last six to 18 months, depending on where they’re injected and the level of facial animation surrounding the filler.

Successful results with facial fillers are heavily dependent on who does the injections. Dr. Applebaum is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has an in-depth understanding of facial anatomy and is better equipped to handle any complications that could occur from using injectables.

Dr. Applebaum also specializes in liposculpture, breast and nipple surgery, and other skin tightening procedures for the body.
