Common Types of Cosmetic Surgery for Men

Plastic surgery has come a long way over the years. Continuous technology advances have improved the aesthetics and decreased healing time.  Plastic surgery has also become more socially accepted, and is no longer just for the rich and famous.

Historically, it was commonly thought that just women underwent plastic surgery, but this is no longer the case.

Today, an increasing number of men are also undergoing plastic surgery.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons shared on their website the results of a new report from the ASPS, which  revealed that more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2018 alone.  This is an increase of 29% since the year 2000.

You may have commonly heard of the Mommy Makeover. Well, similarly, men are now undergoing the Daddy-Do-Over.

Most Common Types of Cosmetic Surgery for Men

Here are the 7 most common cosmetic procedures for men!

Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures by both men and women, and is a procedure used to remove access fat.

However, men who undergo liposuction typically want to define their bodies, not specifically just be more lean.   Liposuction can be performed in various areas of the body. Dr. Robert Applebaum has performed liposuction for over 25 years.  Dr. Applebaum’s Liposcultpure Procedure removes unwanted fat using small cannulas and the tumescent fluid technique. This technique is superior to fat removal using laser or ultrasound.  An added benefit is the incision is very small, resulting in minimal to no sign of surgery afterward.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Gynecomastia is the medical term used to describe enlarged or swelling of breast tissue in men. Gynecomastia is more common than you may think. Gynecomastia is typically caused by an imbalance of male and female hormones, specifically an increase in male estrogen levels. According to Cleveland Clinic, 25% of men experience gynecomastia at mid age or older.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

This helps reduce the appearance of aging that men experience around the eyes. In some situations, blepharoplasty may also improve vision that was previously obstructed by sagging surrounding structures of the eye.

Hair Transplant

Hair loss leaves many men feeling self-conscious and lowers their self-esteem. Androgenic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness, is the most common type of hair loss.  Androgenic alopecia affects more than half of men over the age of 50 years old.  Hair transplants have become increasingly popular, helping men feel more confident.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is commonly known as a nose job. Like in women, rhinoplasty is very popular in men. Rhinoplasty has the ability to completely change the look of one’s face. Compared to women however, Men look for a more defined, straighter nose.

Dermal Fillers

This includes hyaluronic fillers like Juvederm and Voluma, Sculptra, and Radiesse. This option is appealing to many men because this procedure does not involve an open incision.

Neurotoxin Injections

This includes Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin.  The wide range of injectable products available today is more appealing to men.  Injectables help restore volume, smooth wrinkles, fill indented acne scars, jawlines, and shape the nose. An added benefit that there is essentially little or no recovery down time.

What is Included in the Daddy-Do-Over?

The Daddy-Do-Over addresses the physical changes that accompany the lifestyle changes that come after childbirth.  While men do not undergo the skin, muscle and hormone changes that women do; their appearance often changes from the lifestyle change that occurs with being a dad.

These changes may include:

  • A significant amount of increased stress
  • Have significantly less free time
  • Lifestyle changes including less sleep

This procedure helps boost confidence, which may help men succeed in their careers as well, leading to increased career satisfaction.

The Daddy-Do-Over, similarly to the Mommy Makeover, is customized to fit the needs of the patient, and it may include multiple procedures in 1 setting.

What’s the Most Common Age Men Get Plastic Surgery?

What age are men most commonly undergoing plastic surgery? It is a little older than the average age of women!

According to a recent study, the average age for first-time cosmetic surgery is 37 years old for women, and 43 years old for men.

Benefits of Plastic Surgery in Men

Here are some reasons men are finding plastic surgery beneficial:

  • Maintain a more fit and refined appearance
  • Cosmetic surgery is now more socially accepted compared to several    years ago
  • Much more available minimally-invasive treatments
  • Boost of confidence

When selecting a plastic surgeon, men should seek a plastic surgeon who has experience in performing procedures on male patients. Men and women’s bodies differ and each are looking for different aesthetic outcomes from the various procedures.  Years of experience have crafted Dr. Applebaum’s art, where he can provide customized procedures to fit each patient’s desired outcome.

Couples Plastic Surgery

Since there has been an increasing number of both men and women undergoing plastic surgery, it seems only fitting that couples plastic surgery is also on the rise.

Couples plastic surgery is when couples undergo  a plastic surgery procedure at the same time. Think of it like a day date to the plastic surgeon’s office!

With couples plastic surgery, the partners support each other and the experience becomes more enjoyable.  It also provides a great emotional support system for recovery.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the type of procedures couples undergo varies by age.

20’s: Couples in their 20’s come to have dermal fillers or neurotoxin injections, such as Botox. By this age, many signs of aging are not yet showing and fillers and neurotoxin injections can often do the trick.

30’s: Couples in their 30’s typically start considering the Mommy Makeover and Daddy-Do-Over.  Aging and parenting occur in this age group, and both men and women want to try to get to their old bodies from their 20’s, or perhaps look even better than that!

40’s: Couples in their 40’s often undergo facial rejuvenation, including blepharoplasties. This is the age that men and women want to freshen up their look, specifically their face.

50+: Couples 50 years old and older opt for facelifts and neck lifts.  By age 50, signs of aging begin to show if they haven’t already.
