Neck Lift: What You Need to Know

What is a Neck Lift

With the increased social exposure through social media and increased community acceptance, there has been a rise in plastic surgery over the past few years. A plastic surgery procedure that is commonly performed is a facelift. Facelifts are not only a treatment of choice for women, but men are commonly making the decision to undergo facelift surgery. According to an article in MedicalNewsToday, In the US, 107261 women and 13,702 men underwent surgical facelifts in 2016.  While facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, a less commonly familiar word is a neck lift.  A neck lift is also called lower rhytidectomy or platysmaplasty.  Why the long word? Let’s start with some anatomy definitions of different body parts.  Understanding medical terminology may be easier than you think.

  • Platsyma: As defined on Kenhub, The platysma is a thin, sheet-like muscle that lies superficially within the anterior (front) aspect of the neck. So basically, what we commonly refer to as a person’s neck.
  • Rhytid: By dictionary definition, Rhytid, means wrinkle of the skin.
  • -ectomy: is the medical term for removal.  Combining the two:

o   Rhytid + ectomy = removal of wrinkles

  • -plasty: is the medical word meaning repair, restoration, or replacement

o   Platsyma + plasty =  neck restoration

To summarize, a neck lift (or lower rhytidectomy, or platysmaplasty) is a surgical procedure that improves wrinkles and other signs of aging in the jawline and neck.

What are the Benefits

There are several benefits that a person can gain from a neck lift. Here are a few:

  • Reduce signs of aging
  • Contour your jawline and neck
  • Repair sagging skin
  • Combine with additional plastic surgery procedures such facelift procedures
  • Small incisions: limited incision neck lifts are available to use for certain types of neck lifts.
  • Minimal average recovery time: While recovery time varies for each person and procedure, the average recovery time after a facelift/neck lift is about two weeks.
  • Long-lasting results: On average results from a neck lift can last 10 or more years.  While this range can be different for everyone, good skincare will help prolong the visible benefits of a neck lift.

What Age Should you Undergo a Neck Lift?

You may have come across information mentioning that facelifts are most commonly performed during the 50’s decade of life and above.  However, an article in Harpers BAZAAR, reminds readers that age is just a number. The article highlights a woman who underwent a facelift at age 35 and her decision to opt for a more invasive surgery early on.

The best suggestion to help determine if and when a facelift/neck lift is best for you is to schedule a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon.

Ear surgery, also called otoplasty is a surgery often performed when a patient has protruding ears. Often time low-self-esteem may result from unkind comments received about one’s protruding ears. Due to this issue, it is not uncommon for children to also undergo this treatment.  Children must have completed most of their growth, therefore typically otoplasty is not performed until after age 10. • Beverly Hills Face Tite Surgery

The face Tite Surgery helps create a more natural and less “pulled” or “overdone look”.  Dr. Applebaum developed the No-Scalpel, No Scars Face Tite procedure to tighten skin non-surgically.  How does he do this?  He uses FDA approved radiofrequency technology that leads to skin tightening by 30-40%.  His patients are very pleased with the results from the Face Tite Surgery.  Results begin showing approximately 6 weeks after the procedure, and final results approximately 6-8 months after surgery.  A huge benefit is that reduction in recovery time.  Since there is no incision, there is no postoperative pain or discomfort. Patients typically return to work in 7 days after welling and skin discoloration resolves.

  • Laser Skin Resurfacing Beverly Hills

Dr. Applebaum was one of the first plastic surgeons in Los Angeles to use the Dot CO2 Fraction Laser. A significant benefit to this laser is that the treatment can be performed with topical gel anesthesia while the patient is awake. Dr. Applebaum is able to customize this treatment according to each patient’s skin type, skin color, thickness, and the amount of skin damage, scarring, or wrinkles present.  The Dot Co2 laser also works great on areas of the neck, chest, and hands.  Most importantly, the Dot Laser creates permanent collagen rejuvenation with permanent visible improvement of the skin appearance.

One patient commented, “ I love the Dot Laser treatment results with limited recovery time and that Dr. Applebaum performs the procedure under local anesthesia.”  This patient was a 46-year-old mother of three who sought visible results with minimal recovery time.  This is an excellent option for busy women or man that needs to return back to work quickly.
